Movie of the Week - From Russia with Love

This week’s movie is From Russia with Love (1963).

The second James Bond film is about Bond’s mission to retrieve a Soviet encryption device, stolen by SPECTRE. To do this, he must willingly fall into an assassination ploy. The film is directed by Bond frequent collaborator Terence Young (he also directed Dr. No and Thunderball) and written by Bond’s most prolific scribe Richard Maibaum (who wrote 13 of the adventures). It also features work from cinematographer Ted Moore and composer John Barry, both who worked on all the Sean Connery Bond films (the real Bond films, not Never Say Never Again) and additional Bond films, as well as production designer from multi-Bond film collaborator Syd Cain. Starring (the best Bond) Sean Connery, the film also introduces a few of the well known characters and actors in the series: Bernard Lee (M), Lois Maxwell (Miss Moneypenny) and Desmond Llewelyn (Q). Daniela Bianchi, Pedro Armendariz and Robert Shaw are also all very good in their supporting roles. What makes the film great is that it is a Bond adventure in the classic sense – not all hyped up on crazy action, but more of a spy film with the very suave Connery. This is a must see for Connery and Bond fans, not too mention it is a great 60’s film. Check out the trailer.

From Russia with Love is available on Blu-ray and DVD at Amazon.com and to rent from Netflix.com
