Ellie Goulding – Lights (2011) – Review

Ellie Goulding – Lights (U.S. release)

Ellie Goulding burst onto the U.K. pop scene in 2010 with her album Lights, which she made independently primarily with producer Starsmith (of the album’s 12 songs, Starsmith produces 9 of them). What I like about the album is that while it is pop/dance-pop made by a young artist, it does not sound or feel overly fake (like a majority of similar music in the States). This results from Goulding writing her own lyrics about real feeling and situations in her life and her close collaboration with Starsmith, independent to what Record Labels dictate the sound and lyrical content should be (i.e. usually where the whole commercial and soulless fake sound comes from). Starsmith and Goulding have made an album that you can dance to with top-40 appeal, but still resonating with genuine emotion (and great singles). 4/5
