The Weeknd – Thursday Mixtape (2011) – Review

The Weeknd – Thursday
Canadian singer The Weeknd burst onto the scene earlier this year with his first mixtape House of Balloons (available here), which was probably the best album of the first half of 2011. His second mixtape Thursday is also very good. The Weeknd has a similar sound to another wonderful modern R&B artist, The-Dream, but much rawer – which is one of the most compelling aspects of his songs. There is so much emotion, mostly coming across as sadness. The brilliant production by Doc McKinney & Illangelo gives the album such a dark atmospheric feel. House of Balloons caught the attention of fellow Canadian Drake, who is featured on this album and is working with The Weeknd on his own forthcoming album Take Care. Picking three tracks above the rest is difficult as the whole album is very good and has such a great flow and build to it. Both House of Balloons and Thursday are breaths of fresh air and are both musts. I cannot wait to hear his third mixtape Echoes of Silence. If you have not heard Thursday yet, go download it, as there has not been too much music better this year. 4/5
